Rhino park at the zoo

Bronze rhinoceros at the entrance, left behind the prayer wheels, 1 January 2009
On the forecourt of the rhino park stands a sculpture by the artist Gottfried Kumpf. This bronze rhinoceros is probably one of the most popular "monkey bars" and photo opportunities of the zoo.

Before the outdoor complex, between the building and the visitor pulpit, there is a crate. One can only imagine what must have had great confidence in the Rhinos to their caregivers, so they went voluntarily into this box.

Construction
In Vienna, started in 2004 with the construction of the park's rhino. With the participation of district manager Helmut Ulzer a wonderful welfare system was created with an internal system of approximately 600 square feet on a 6,000 square meter outdoor facility - one of the largest Indian rhinoceros facilities in Europe. The building was built virtually into the slope. This not only saves space, it also provides a natural cooling of the back rooms (storage rooms, etc.).

After about 18 months of construction on the facility was opened in March 2006. Both the outdoor complex as well as the inner part is divided in two. The house also has its own off area is available.
Visitor Gallery
In a semicircle around the indoor unit is located around a covered and sheltered visitors gallery as a kind of outer part of the rhino house.

Foreign investment
Sundari and Jang share the grounds with axis deer, blackbuck antelope and Nilgauantilopen. The front (larger) part of the grounds you can see very well in the following video. Sundari had here - it weighs 968 kg! - Its just crazy! Minutes:

From the pulpit of one visitor has a magnificent view of the front part of the grounds, in particular one can experience the animals up close and wallowing in the pool. Jang appeared here and sleep in the pool:
Sundari vs. Nilgau, at the beginning of the video, Sundi also throws into the muddy pool, which is located directly at the pulpit visitors:
In the pool at the front of the outdoor area was located - to the surprise of many visitors - to October 2009, a car wreck in the context of the art project Trouble in Paradise:

The colored flags are not part of this art project! These are the flags at a Buddhist prayer flags. If they flutter in the wind, they should keep away evil spirits and demons and carry the prayers to heaven.
In front of the building there are also ten Tibetan prayer wheels. They are - like the two rhinos - a gift from the Nepalese king at the Vienna Zoo. Rolls of paper stuck inside the mills, inscribed with auspicious mantras (prayers). The prayer wheels were on 28 Lama Ole Nydahl in October 2008 of the paper rolls filled with, inaugurated and blessed. If the wheels are turned with the right hand rotate clockwise, and the mantras. This will bring good karma, love, happiness, satisfaction and health for the person who spins, and for the place where you will find the prayer wheels.

We hear again and again at Rhino Park bells. This comes from a large cowbell, which is mounted between the two transitions into the indoor facility. Jang and the bell can Sundi "give notice" that they want into it. But it can also serve for example as "children, dinner's ready" call.
Incidentally, the team of the rhino park also has a heart for the little ones. Thus, the Spatzerl (or whatever the little birdies are for), build a nest in the sliding door was placed a nesting box extra:

That even when Eichkatzerl rhino park feel need to be sure no extra points:

Who could resist this look? 26th December 2009
That the dark Eichkatzerl at this point of view got some Nashi is quite clear. That it is quite cheeky on my jacket and clambered around nuts and just took it out of hand, so I did not expect. ![]()
Currently, you can also see wild turkey with her mom 7-headed little rascals often in the rhino-conditioning:
